Bali and Komodo sit on different islands, and there is no road between them. You fly to Labuan Bajo, take the slow overland route or buy a package that starts in Bali. Here are the three ways, with the airlines, listings and prices we can actually back up.
Editorial team, komododaytour.quest · Updated November 2, 2026 · Reading time: about 6 minutes
The essentials list
Searches for a Komodo Island tour from Bali, or for the way from Bali to Komodo National Park, assume a short hop. The geography says otherwise. The park sits on the far side of Sumbawa, with the Sape Strait separating it from that island, and its gateway is Labuan Bajo on the western tip of Flores.3,4 Between Bali and that harbor lie Lombok and Sumbawa, so you either fly over them or cross them slowly.
There is also no way to fly into the park itself. Komodo International Airport serves Labuan Bajo, and the airport sits about 3 km from the town centre.2 From the town, boats leave for the islands, and every plan on this page ends the same way: you stand on a pier in Labuan Bajo and board a boat.
That shapes the question you should really be asking. It is not how to reach the park from Bali in one day. It is how many nights you want to give Labuan Bajo. The boat day itself is a full day and starts early. The sections below treat the flight, the overland route and the package as three answers to that single question.
Three routes side by side
| Route | What it uses | Where it ends | Expect this |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly, then book a boat | Denpasar flight | Labuan Bajo | Boat from $93 |
| Bali-start package | Flight and 2-day boat | Labuan Bajo | From $2,445 |
| Overland and ferry | Public ferries | Labuan Bajo via Sape | Days, not hours |
The flight route, the package and the ferry link come from the airport's destination list, the package listing and the town's ferry service; the overland duration is shown as several days, since no source states it.1,2
The flight is how nearly everyone does it. According to the airport's destination list, Denpasar is served by Batik Air and Indonesia AirAsia, and NAM Air begins Denpasar flights on 27 November 2026.1 Other carriers connect Labuan Bajo with Jakarta, and Wings Air links it with Lombok, Makassar and several Flores and Nusa Tenggara towns.5
The runway handles the traffic. It was extended to 2,650 meters in length and 45 meters in width, enough for the narrow-body jets these routes use.6 We do not quote a fare or a flight time here. Check the airlines' own pages for the date you want and book the flight before the boat.
Time your flights around the boat. A private 2-day listing recommends a morning flight to Labuan Bajo on day 1, and a liveaboard listing recommends booking a flight that leaves after 2:00 PM on the last day. Both notes point the same way: arrive early in the day you start and leave late in the day you finish.
A three-day plan from Bali
Day 1 · morning
A morning flight is the advice for a trip that starts on day 1.
Once you land
The airport is about 3 km from the centre.2
Day 2 · 5:30 to 6:15 AM
The speedboat listing picks up in that window.
Day 2 · all day
Our fast-boat day lasts 10 hours with pickup included.
Day 2 · 3:00 to 4:00 PM
The speedboat typically returns in that window.
Day 3 · after 2:00 PM
A liveaboard listing advises a flight after 2:00 PM.
If you have time and a small budget, the overland route exists. Public ferry services connect Labuan Bajo with Sape on Sumbawa, carrying passengers and vehicles between the two islands.2 Sape is the end of the road on Sumbawa's eastern side, and from there the crossing brings you to the harbor the park tours leave from.
That is only the last leg of a longer chain. From Bali you would also cross to Lombok and then travel the length of Sumbawa, so the trip takes days, not hours. The sources we use give no schedule for those legs, so we leave out any timing and cost, and we do not recommend building a tight itinerary around them.
The overland route makes sense for travelers already moving east across Indonesia with no deadline. For anyone with a fixed number of days in Bali, the flight is the practical choice. The ferry story is still worth knowing: a Komodo trip from Bali is never a casual day out.

Flight and boat together
Some listings fold the flight into a tour that starts in Bali. A private 2-day Komodo tour listed under Bali begins with a flight to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, then visits Rinca Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Siaba Island and Kanawa Island, with a night on a boat and a return flight after the final stop. It starts from $2,445 and has no reviews yet.
Flying yourself and booking a boat in Labuan Bajo reverses the order. Our day is a 10-hour fast-boat trip with pickup included, a English-speaking Komodo guide, 1,663 reviews and a rating of 4.74, from $93. You pay for the flight separately, but the boat part can be a fraction of the package price.
Neither is the right answer for everyone. A package takes the planning off your hands and keeps the whole trip to 2 days, while booking yourself is cheaper and lets you pick the boat, the date and the number of nights. If your Bali stay is short and your budget is large, the package earns its price. If not, fly and book.
The fast-boat day is long. Ours runs 10 hours, and another shared speedboat listing picks guests up between 5:30 and 6:15 AM and typically returns to the harbour between 3:00 and 4:00 PM. Nobody finishes that day and catches an evening flight comfortably, which is why operators suggest a buffer.
A liveaboard listing recommends arriving in Labuan Bajo at least one day before the trip to avoid delays caused by flight disruptions. That advice applies to day tours as well. One night in town before the boat and one night after covers most problems, from a late flight to a boat that waits out the weather.
So the realistic minimum is three days away from Bali for a single boat day: land, sail, fly home. Add a second boat day or a night aboard and you are at four. The shared 2-day, 1-night boat tour sits in between, with a shared cabin and a Padar sunrise, from $179.

Checklist
Knowing how to get to Komodo National Park is half the job; after the flight, the boat choice is the same one every visitor makes. There is the 10-hour day for one outing, the 2-day shared boat for a night aboard and the budget 3-day liveaboard for a longer trip. The boat tours page on this site compares them in detail, and the Labuan Bajo page covers the land tours around them.
For first-timers, the one-day boat is the low-risk start. It lists pickup as included, your money back in full when you cancel at least 24 hours ahead, and the option to book now and pay later. That means you can book the boat after you have a flight, and move it if the flight moves, without losing the fee within the window.
Remember what the listing says about the park. Its order of stops may vary with weather, sea conditions and park rules, and Komodo Island may be closed temporarily, especially in months such as November, December and January. A Bali schedule with no spare day has no way to absorb that, which is one more reason to leave a buffer.
