  • Manta PointAnother name for Makassar Reef; prime manta season is Sep to Nov.2,3
  • CurrentsBatu Bolong is known for strong currents.4
  • Dive feeRp25,000 per person per activity, apart from the park ticket.5
  • Snorkel feeThe Rp250,000 foreign ticket already covers snorkeling.6

What lives here: the reef behind the headline

The park's own site says its marine fauna includes over 260 species of reef-building coral, 70 species of sponge and over 1,000 species of fish, and that its three main marine ecosystems are seagrass beds, coral reefs and mangrove forests.1,7 The waters belong to the Coral Triangle, which Indonesia.Travel describes as home to sea turtles, manta rays, whales and dolphins, and RRI repeats that visitors can meet manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins and other marine species.8,9

Temperature varies by zone. The park's site gives water at 25 to 29 degrees C in the north, 24 to 28 in the middle and 22 to 28 in the south.10 Across a range from 22 to 29 degrees, a thin wetsuit or rash vest is a sensible carry for a one-hour swim,10 and a diver who spends longer in the water may want a full suit. Warm water tempts people to skip the layer, but an hour of floating cools you faster than you expect, and a shivering snorkeler sees less than a comfortable one.

UNESCO's listing adds that the coral reefs host a great diversity of species and that the strong currents of the sea attract sea turtles, whales, dolphins and dugongs.11 The same currents that feed the reef make the diving serious. The park's site calls the combination of strong currents, coral reefs and islets a reason navigation around the islands is difficult and dangerous.12 Read the next sections with that in mind.

Manta Point and the snorkeler's boat day

Indonesia.Travel says Makassar Reef is also known as Manta Point and is home to a large population of manta rays.2 A sample itinerary on the same ministry page sends visitors to nearby Manta Point to snorkel and encounter giant manta rays.15 On the map panels the reef sits north of Padar and west of Batu Bolong, so it is a different stretch of water from the dragon trail on Komodo.

The day tour this site sells lists a snorkel stop for 1 hour at Manta Point, then 1 hour of swimming and snorkeling at Pulau Makasar and 1 hour at Kanawa Island, with Pink Beach earlier in the day. Its good-to-know note says manta ray and turtle sightings are not guaranteed and depend on weather, water temperature and luck. A 12-hour speedboat listing also lists a snorkel stop at Siaba Besar for 1 hour, with marine life viewing.

Season matters for mantas. Indonesia.Travel names September to November the prime season for spotting manta rays, whale sharks and dragons, with April to June and September to December the best times overall, and January to March the rainy season that often disrupts boat trips.3,13 The ministry's page also calls Pink Beach a favorite snorkeling spot, so a day with both gets you a sure reef and a possible giant.16

Cold or warm

The coolest water in each zone of the park

  • South zone22 °C
  • Middle zone24 °C
  • North zone25 °C

The park's own site gives the coolest readings: 22 in the south, 24 in the middle and 25 in the north, up to 28 or 29 at the warm end.10

Where certified divers go: Batu Bolong, Siaba and the currents

Indonesia.Travel describes Batu Bolong as known for strong currents that attract pelagic fish, a favorite among experienced divers.4 Siaba Besar is a pinnacle site where large pelagics such as sharks and tuna can be met,17 and Pink Beach is a dive site famed for vibrant coral gardens and rich macro life.18 The Sebayur islands are described as dive spots with clear water, turtles and occasional manta rays and sharks.21

The park's own site gives the old hands' rules. At Tanjung Rusa it describes strong currents and sometimes down-currents and recommends diving at slack tide.19 Nisaleme is a very exposed rocky island that can be difficult to dive, with strong down-currents during rapid tidal flow,22 while Lohwenci is a pleasant, relatively current-free dive just north of the ranger station.20 The range runs from gentle to serious, and your briefing should say which one you are on.

The risk is not abstract. ANTARA reported that police used sonar and an underwater drone to look for a dive master missing since the Feronia ship sank in the park, without success after ten days.23 The search focused on waters including Tatawa Besar, Batu Bolong, Mawan, Batu Tiga and Sebayur, and police named dynamic underwater currents as one of the biggest challenges.24,25 Choose an operator for its briefings and boat handling, not only for the price.

The costs: park tickets, the dive fee and the trips

The head of the park authority described the tariff in October 2024, under Government Regulation 36 of 2024: for foreign visitors the ticket is Rp250,000 per person on weekdays and holidays, and it covers trekking, wildlife viewing and snorkeling.35,6 Diving carries a separate ticket of Rp25,000 per person per activity.5 The statements about the new quota that ANTARA carried mention no change to those prices, so they are the latest figures we found; this is a statement from a briefing, not a current tariff sheet, so check the price for your date.

On the trip side, the boat day this site sells is listed from $93, with 4 snorkeling stops among its 6 stops. A half-day snorkeling outing from Labuan Bajo by car, to Rangko Cave and Boleng Beach, is listed from $45. A full-day open trip for certified divers, limited to 4 participants, is listed from $225, and a try-scuba experience with an 8-hour day from $231.

A scuba outing with an instructor, listed as 3.5 hours of diving plus 1 hour by car each way, starts from $363. Note the reviews: the certified-diver day has 1 review rated 5.0, and the other two diving listings have none yet, against 1,663 for the boat day. Read the operator's details and ask about group size, equipment, dive sites and the briefing before you pay a diving price, because a short review history gives you little to lean on.

Rules that touch the water

The quota that began on April 1, 2026 caps the park at 1,000 visitors a day and focuses on Padar, Rinca and Komodo Islands including 23 surrounding dive sites.36,37,38 Your dive or snorkel day therefore sits inside that system, so ask the operator how your slot is arranged and what happens if the day is cancelled for weather. The limit is run through the park authority's SiOra app, and the head of the authority has said unused days can be carried over to busier months.39,40

The agency says coral reef conditions in the park's waters are declining because of the surge of visitors without adequate management.41 The park's own site records that hard corals at the GPS Point seamount were severely damaged by dynamite fishing in 1997 and 1998,42 and names destructive fishing as the most potent threat to the park's biodiversity.43 A reef that took a hit like that rewards careful visitors: keep fins and hands off the coral and the animals.

Paperwork and fitness are part of the dive. The certified-diver listing asks guests to give their certification level and the date of their last dive, and says dive sites may change with weather, sea conditions and currents. The try-scuba listing caps depth at 12 meters, and the instructor-led scuba listing requires a health check and advises against flying 12 to 18 hours after diving. Plan the flight home accordingly.

Picking your trip by skill and nerve

Non-divers who just want to float over coral have two sensible choices. One is the boat day with its snorkel stops. The other is the half-day by car to Rangko Cave and Boleng Beach, which RRI reported as running as usual, with facilities declared safe, after the earthquake in Flores.44,45 The boat day covers more reef and the half-day costs less, so the choice is between variety and budget.

First-time divers have one honest option in the listings we checked: the try-scuba experience, capped at 12 meters and run with an instructor in a small group. Go with an operator that answers your questions before you book, and say if you are nervous in open water. Certified divers should ask which of the named sites are planned and when slack tide falls, because the park's own site ties some of its dives to that window.19

A liveaboard-style trip is one way to cover the whole map. A 3-day sailing tour for small groups of up to 4 lists Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong, Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar, Manta Point, Kanawa and Sebayur among its stops and is listed from $312. The listing facts we hold describe a sailing tour, not a dive package, so check any dive terms with the operator and remember that a snorkeler can book it as readily as a diver.
